The thing I can’t get over is how inconsequential they made Dany seem. They killed her off quickly and violently, had Drogon carry her body away like the writers were taking out the garbage, and she isn’t mentioned again except in terms of Tyrion’s and Jon’s farce of a trial for her murder. Her legacy is dust. She isn’t remembered fondly.
She was executed with no trial, a mercy even the wretched Tarlys were given in s7. Think about that. However “mad” Dany was, she didn’t execute Tyrion or Jon at the drop of a hat, despite knowing they’d both betrayed her. But they couldn’t offer her the same respect of imprisonment or trial. They just tricked and murdered her. She doesn’t even have a funeral. As a long-time fan of her character I feel absolutely curb-stomped by the abruptness and brutality of it all.
“Her speeches were about the sanctity of the home, about how women should stay home. Serena Joy didn’t do this herself, she made speeches instead, but she presented this failure of hers as a sacrifice she was making for the good of all.”
Context: Schlafly was a lawyer. She went to college. Got an education. She had a career. She liked having a career. (Why do it, otherwise?) Even if that career is about hurting other women, telling them they shouldn’t go to college and siding with men for money and fame.
But Atwood, sick of her hypocrisy, gives her the ultimate payback.
“She doesn’t make speeches anymore. She has become speechless. She stays in her home, but it doesn’t seem to agree with her. How furious she must be now that she has been taken at her word.”
Powerful
The point is made clear in the TV show when Serena arrives in Canada and is given her itinerary. All pictures. Because, hey, she can’t read or write. Even though she obviously can. And everyone knows she can.
The look of dismay on Serena’s face, tho.
She is being treated like an illiterate toddler. It is insulting.
But, hey, aren’t they the rules you help write for women in the first place?
HOLY SHIT I FORGOT THAT SCENE OMG ASDFGHJOKL
It’s a very subtle moment.
But you do suspect it is one of the most humiliating moments of this woman’s life.
Context; Serena literally wrote a best-selling book on domestic feminism that, as the Mexican ambassador suggests, has been read all around the world.
Now she gets bad clip art pictures because she’s too dumb to understand basic language and words.
‘Women should not have equal rights! We should totally obey all these creepy religious, sexist and violent men.’
Yes, Serena, How is that one working out for you?
I *almost* feel sorry for Serena in the same way I *almost* feel sorry for Cersei Lannister, Sansa Stark, and Melania Trump.
Key word is almost.
It’s not that they believe she cannot read, it’s that she is no longer legally allowed to read, and she was pivotal in making that change happen. It’s a testament to her own hypocrisy and it’s devastating. This show is so well-written, oh my god.
Why is Sansa grouped in with Cersei and Melania tho? Sansa was like, a child.
This is so infuriating? Like do you really think war and smart phones cant exist in the same country at the same time without cancellation? Those phones (not even “expensive smartphones”) are probably all the connection they have with family. And that a phone = rich, and that their having a phone erases their status as refugees?
I got a smartphone brand new for $20, it’s not great and pretty far behind compared to the new phones but it was cheap.
My friend in Columbia was able to buy a similar one for about $12.
And also there is the fact that you can actually be middle class or even rich and end up as a refugee!
Let’s say your town floods and you can only grab what you can fit in a single backpack of course you are going to take your damn phone! ESPECIALLY when your entire family is split up cause the evacuation happened out of nowhere and you want to be able to find them again.
Racist white people seem to think cell phones cost $5 million dollars and nobody but tech billionaires and other whites should own them.
Literally everyone knows to have a fully charged phone in an emergency situation, but once non westerners try to have a fully charged phone in a situation, it’s some sort of fucking luxury that should be condemned. Didn’t realize that disaster and upheaval came with a mandatory downgrade for your cell phone.
not to mention that pretty much every single electronic that was formerly a luxury good is rapidly becoming cheaper and cheaper everywhere
this includes cell phones as well
this is almost as bad as “Why are poor people buying food?”
ok for perspective here:
there are more televisions in the united states than there are people.
there are more cell phones in the united states than there are people.
there are more computers in the united states than there are people.
